About genova

Time zone: UTC/GMT +1 hour - CET (Central European Time)

The city of Genoa (Genova in Italian) is the capital of Liguria region and the largest seaport in Italy. The town's maritime importance goes back centuries. The port was first used by the Etruscans before they were replaced by the Greeks in the 6th and 5th century BC. The massive shipyards and steelworks dates as early as Middle Ages. Today, the city is one of the oldest shipbuilding towns in the world, and shipbuilding is still a major fulcrum to the Genoan economy.

Genoa’s Old Town has been listed by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in order to preserve the old architectural marvels of the city.

Weekend visitors can admire modern, Renaissance and Baroque architecture, fancy palaces and a host of museums and galleries. There are hip art cafes, boat trips and a large aquarium: a wide range of activities for a holiday or short trip.

Genoa is a rejuvenated cultural centre - European Capital of Culture in 2004 – and offers an intense cultural life: unique museums, great theatrical and musical tradition, important exhibitions and great international shows, such as Euroflora and International Boat Show.

Genoa is also a good starting-point or stopover on a tour of the Italian Riviera. It is linked by railway to most of the region's coastal destinations, including the villages of the Cinque Terre.
